R.I.P. Michael Jackson 1958-2009


I first heard the news last night, just before I was to shut down the computer and head to bed. Words can't really express how shocked and gutted I felt - bad enough hearing Farrah Fawcett (of Charlie's Angels fame in the Seventies) had passed away, without this as well. A lot of my friends had got tickets for his comeback concerts in London next month, and this was the last thing we were all expecting. I must confess part of me thought it was a weird hoax until it was definitively confirmed a few minutes later.

Michael Jackson was as troubled as he was talented, but whatever one's opinions on his private life or his music, there is no denying that he probably made the biggest contribution and impact on popular music and popular culture. His songs inspired and touched millions, young and old, black and white, rich and poor, country to country, and today the world seems united in grief for the tragic loss of this incredibly gifted performer.

I'm not sure if there's any images I can use for free so I thought I'd round off this post with a video of one of his songs from my childhood that I really like - "Heal The World". Rest in peace, Michael.

    To be honest I think your post on the matter was much better than mine - balanced, objective, intelligent and above all, very fair. It's the sort of post that non-fans and fans alike would appreciate - you don't get carried away in what an anti-Jacko fan would see as sentimental hysteria, but it's touching enough and thoughtful enough that any Jacko fan would agree with what you've said. So I just HAD to link to it, in fact I was tempted to quote from it too :-)

    that's kind of what i said about him...he was troubled but sooo sooo talented. I went on vacation and Ed McMahon, Farah Fawcett, Michael Jackson, and Billy Mays die...crazy week.

    Heya OP, great to see you back again. Yeah, what is it about you going on holiday and four people die in your absence?!?! LOL! You're completely right, he was incredibly talented. Pity about his personal troubles, but there you go.

    I would just like to join in here; I couldn't agree more! Poor Michael Jackson - he should've had some more good performing years.

    It's almost surreal. He's been around forever - our generation's Elvis, perhaps.

    The news just felt surreal didn't it? I am hoping they clear all this mess up soon though, it is getting taxing always seeing news about how he died and who the children are going to...it must be so hard to grieve when the whole world is pestering you.
